At the 10th session of the European Workshops in International Studies (EWIS) that took place at the University of Amsterdam between 12 and 14 July 2023, Dr. Jan Busse organized a workshop, titled “After neoliberalism’ and on the ‘dark side’? The study of governmentality and counter-conduct in times of growing autocratization” jointly with Dr. Julia Simon from the Helmut-Schmidt-University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg.

The workshop assembled a diverse combination of international scholars working with the concept of governmentality – a term denoting a broad understanding of indirect governance originally coined by Michel Foucault. The contributors to the workshop encompassed not only post-doctoral researchers but also established researchers who have played a key role in advancing this field of study. The EWIS format provided the workshop participants with a structured atmosphere that enabled intensive and in-depth exchanges on the respective paper contributions. Thereby, the workshop was a useful preparation for the aim of submitting the papers as a special issue to a leading peer-reviewed journal.

Dr. Busse is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. At the Institute of Political Science Dr. Jan Busse works on questions of global order with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa.
