Thomas Delamotte Honored with VDE Bayern Award

13 October 2020

The Bavarian Branch of the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) has given its renowned VDE Bayern Award to Dr. Thomas Delamotte, who is a member of the SPACE research center, for his doctoral dissertation “MIMO Feeder Links for Very High Throughput Satellites”.

The VDE Bayern Award is given annually in recognition of outstanding scientific work. Dr. Thomas Delamotte was selected as one of the prize winners in 2020 for his doctoral dissertation on satellite communication.

Under the supervision of Professor Dr. Andreas Knopp, Dr. Delamotte developed an innovative approach to robust, high-speed data transmission between ground stations and geostationary very high-throughput satellites (VHTS). Based on multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology, his breakthrough paves the way for the optimal use of limited uplink frequency resources in future 5G and beyond satellite systems. These systems will support broadband internet for remote areas, aircraft and vessels and also applications such as backhaul in order to increase the coverage of terrestrial network infrastructure.

The official award ceremony will take place during the VDE Bayern evening on November 12, 2020.
