Amelia Earhart Fellowship for Maren Hülsmann

Maren Hülsmann, a doctoral student at the Chair of Astronautics, has been awarded the Amelia Earhart Fellowship by ZONTA International for the academic year 2022-2023.

Maren Hülsmann, a doctoral student at the professorship of Space Technology, was awarded the Amelia Earhart Fellowship by ZONTA International for the 2022-2023 academic year.

In 2021, Hülsmann had already been honored for her doctoral project with the Amelia Earthart Club Award of the ZONTA Club Munich I. Now she has received the $10,000 award, which is presented annually to only up to 35 outstanding female scientists in the field of aerospace.

In her research, Maren Hülsmann deals with artificial intelligence on board spacecraft. She aims to autonomously detect and react to dangerous events such as disturbances and collisions in orbit, thus making the operation of satellite applications and spacecraft safer. As low-Earth orbit will become even more crowded and collisions more likely with the operation of future mega-constellations, systems that can respond autonomously and prevent dangerous events are of enormous importance.

"Maren Hülsmann is doing research on an extremely important and timely topic, and she was rightly awarded the prize because of the great work she is doing here, her dedication, and the amount of progress she is making," said Prof. Förstner, Maren Hülsmann's supervisor and a founding member of RC SPACE.
