The paper “Listening to the wind of change: Predicting protest dynamics in autocracies using Wikipedia page changes” uses information about changes to 48 country-specific Wikipedia pages, such as human rights, political parties or elections in a country, for 93 autocracies to predict monthly pro- and anti-government protest incidences and numbers. Empirical evidence suggests that these page changes carry considerable predictive power, both individually and in combination with past protest activity. Wikipedia data are updated in real time which makes them attractive for monitoring and early warning systems.
