Standardized Language Profile (SLP)

Within NATO, foreign language proficiency is documented using the Standardized Language Profile (SLP). This standardized performance grading system, which enables a nuanced assessment of current language knowledge and skills, forms the basis for all language examinations conducted by the Federal Language Office.

Definition of proficiency levels

The level of proficiency in a foreign language is defined according to four proficiency levels for each of the four core skills: listening comprehension (listening), oral production (speaking), reading comprehension (reading) and written production (writing). Specifically, these are

SLP 1:
Basic skills within a limited and familiar general framework.

SLP 2:
Limited skills in a general and vocational context.

SLP 3:
Ability to function in general social and professional contexts, including in areas with which one is not familiar.

SLP 4:
Confidence in general social and professional contexts, including in areas with which one is not familiar.
