Visit of a delegation from the United States Military Academy Westpoint

From January 15th to 21st, 2026, a six-member delegation from the West Point Military Academy, led by Professor Eric Williams, visited our institute. The purpose of the visit was to establish a collaboration between the two faculties, with the possibility of exchange programs for students from both sides.

Furthermore, a cooperation on the research topic "Calculate the load carrying capacity of bridges with Finite-Element Analysis with geometry made from scanned point clouds" was established.

A high-density point cloud of a bridge pillar, captured by the cadets of United States Military Academy was converted into a watertight CAD geometry, capturing the pillar's exact as-built dimensions. A solid FEM mesh was made from this geometry. Finally, the model was simulated in LS-DYNA to analyse its response to dynamic loading.
