A Heartfelt Welcome to Benno Schönstein

22 September 2025

The IMCS welcomes Benno Schönstein as a new member of the computer-based simulation group.

Benno studied mechanical engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). In his master's thesis, he focused on predicting the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites, combining modern deep learning methods with data obtained from simulations.

As part of the InterPlaS projectModeling the Interaction of Elasto-Plasticity, Damage, and Delamination in Composite Laminate, he will develop high-resolution numerical methods in collaboration with Dr.-Ing. Matthias Mayr and Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Brandstäter, as well as the Wehrwissenschaftliches Institut für Werk- und Betriebsstoffe (WIWeB) of the German Federal Armed Forces. The aim is to model the material behavior of fiber-reinforced composites across different scales, integrate modern methods of uncertainty quantification, and validate the results through experiments.

We are delighted to welcome Benno to our team and wish him all the best for his project.
