"Tag der Bundeswehr" 2026 Featuring Two IMCS Exhibitions

The Institute of Mathematics and Computer-Based Simulation (IMCS) was represented with two exhibitions at "Tag der Bundeswehr" 2026, held on site of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. Numerous visitors took the opportunity to explore hands-on mathematics, current research topics, and interactive demonstrations.

As part of the exhibition “Hands-on Mathematics,” Thomas Apel, Katharina Lorenz, Johannes Pfefferer, and Philipp Zilk, together with ME students Kira Kluge and Lars Nickenig, presented a variety of mathematical exhibits that made abstract concepts tangible through playful interaction. These included soap films illustrating minimal surfaces, Efron’s dice, the Boss Puzzle, and the brachistochrone shown in the picture. The exhibition was complemented by posters on current research topics and an interactive program for identifying gas leaks.

The second IMCS-related exhibition was presented within the framework of the RISK Research Center. Among the exhibits was the famous Leonardo da Vinci bridge (see below), which visitors could also construct themselves using small building kits. In addition, colleagues led by Daniel Wolff and Simon Völkl provided insights into their research project RISK.twin, which combines risk analysis, modeling, and simulation to create digital twins for critical infrastructures.

Overall, the "Tag der Bundeswehr" attracted a large number of interested guests and provided an excellent opportunity to present the research and teaching activities of IMCS to a broad audience. Thanks in part to the dedicated contributions of our institute, the event was a great success.
