Exploring AI at the IMCS Research Days 2025

7 November 2025

Earlier this week, on November 4th and 5th, the simulation group of IMCS gathered at the beautiful Haus der Bayerischen Landwirtschaft in Herrsching am Ammersee for our annual IMCS Research Days.

This year’s theme was all about Artificial Intelligence:How we can harness AI tools to enhance our daily workflows in research, teaching, and administration. Together, we explored questions such as:

  • For which tasks can we trust AI tools to produce reliable results?
  • Where should we remain skeptical and critical of their output?

Our group members prepared a diverse range of sessions, covering topics from practical applications, such as AI tools for scientific writing, programming, image and video generation, and everyday office work, to technical insights into how AI models like transformers actually work. We also delved into topics likeprompt engineering, ethical considerations, and the legal implications of using AI in research.

The lively discussions and hands-on sessions helped us form a balanced view: While AI can significantly support our work, critical reflection and awareness of its limitations remain essential for every application.

Of course, our retreat wasn’t all serious discussions: We also enjoyed plenty of time for team building. And while AI tools may recognize a song within seconds, we found that guessing the artist, title, and especially the release year together is sometimes much more fun.
