Workshop in Udine Strengthens German–Italian Collaboration
26 Februar 2026
The 3rd German–Italian Workshop on Common Research Interests in Computational Mechanics recently took place at CISM in Udine, continuing a successful bilateral initiative between the German Association of Computational Mechanics (GACM) and the Italian Group of Computational Mechanics (GIMC). Following previous editions in Udine (2018) and Aachen (2023), the workshop once again provided a dedicated forum for scientific exchange and the initiation of new research collaborations between the German and Italian computational mechanics communities.
The workshop was coordinated on behalf of GACM and GIMC by Giovanni Garcea (Università della Calabria), Norbert Hosters (RWTH Aachen University), Michele Marino (Università di Roma Tor Vergata), Francesco Marmo (Università di Napoli Federico II), and Alexander Popp (Universität der Bundeswehr München). Their joint efforts underline the strong commitment on both sides to further consolidating this long-standing German–Italian partnership.
Participation was by invitation, and presentations highlighted recent joint results, ongoing challenges, and promising future directions, underlining the value of sustained bilateral cooperation in computational mechanics.
From IMCS, Institute Head Alexander Popp served as co-organizer of this edition of the workshop. In addition, Sebastian Brandstaeter participated in the scientific programme. Both contributed presentations showcasing their latest research activities and collaborative efforts with Italian partners: Alexander Popp presented the institute’s work on mixed-dimensional modelling, while Sebastian Brandstaeter spoke about probabilistic analyses in computational mechanics.
The event was hosted at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) in Udine, offering an inspiring academic environment and an excellent setting for in-depth discussions. The pleasant atmosphere, combined with a well-organized social programme, created ideal conditions for networking and for strengthening personal and professional ties. Overall, the workshop once again demonstrated how valuable and enjoyable German–Italian scientific exchange can be.
