sensor coverage on the airport apron

1 March 2022

For research in the field of automated airport aprons, the first step is to determine the necessary sensor coverage. A variety of sensors (e.g. LiDAR, camera systems) can be used for this purpose. These can be mounted either statically on the existing infrastructure or on moving objects (e.g. vehicles on the apron, or aircraft).

For this purpose, an airport with its infrastructure and the movements on the airport apron are to be mapped in a simplified simulation environment in the first step. Then the researched sensor systems are to be placed in this environment in such a way that a good coverage can be guaranteed. The results obtained are to be suitably summarized and formulated as a requirements analysis for future automated taxiing and handling processes.
