evaluation of controller workload via eye-tracking

1 February 2025

Understanding and optimizing air traffic controller workload is critical for safe and efficient airspace management. This student research opportunity focuses on integrating the SmartEye eye-tracking system into a high-fidelity air traffic simulation environment. With SmartEye, controllers' gaze direction is tracked in real time, offering valuable insights into cognitive workload and decision-making processes. To ensure precise measurements, you will:

  • Design and implement an experimental setup for system calibration
  • Conduct a measurement campaign to fine-tune accuracy
  • Analyze real-world data and validate the system with controllers in a live test run

This project provides hands-on experience with state-of-the-art eye-tracking technology and contributes to ongoing research in air traffic management and human factors.
