The realistic representation of 3D environments enables an immersive experience of real operational processes. Through the development of a virtual cabin (mixed-reality environment), the chair is enabled to test innovative process workflows for future handling and turnaround operations and to further develop them in an iterative manner.

Within the current laboratory environment, the positions of participants can be determined with high precision, and interactions between simulated and real persons can be synchronized. As part of student research projects, the capabilities of the virtual cabin are to be extended, new process workflows are to be developed, and these are to be thoroughly investigated using test scenarios. The topic is particularly well suited for group projects, with individual focus areas being selectable according to personal skills and interests.
