Prof. Dr. Martin Welz ist seit April 2023 Professor für Vergleichende Politische Kulturforschung. Er studierte Politik- und Verwaltungswissenschaft an der Universität Konstanz und der Universität Pretoria und Internationale Beziehungen an der London School of Economics and Political Science. Im Jahr 2011 wurde er mit einer Arbeit zur Afrikanischen Union an der Universität Konstanz promoviert. Im Anschluss arbeitete er dort und an der Universität Hamburg als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und war Vertretungsprofessor an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena sowie Gastwissenschaftler an der School of International and Public Affairs der Columbia University. Weitere Forschungsaufenthalte führten Martin Welz u. a. nach Äthiopien, Mauritius, Simbabwe, Südafrika und Uganda. Prof. Martin Welz ist auch für den Bertelsmann Transformationsindex als Regionalkoordinator für West- und Zentralafrika tätig.

In seiner Forschung beschäftigt sich Prof. Welz mit afrikanischer Geschichte und Politik, der Afrikanischen Union, Afrikas Rolle in der Welt sowie internationalen Ordnungen und Friedensoperationen.
