Stephanie Marx is a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of General Cultural Studies, headed by Eva Blome. She studied German Studies and Philosophy in Vienna and Berlin and received her PhD in 2025 with her dissertation “Der Streitfall Neue Sachlichkeit. Politische Literatur von Maria Leitner, Joseph Roth und Irmgard Keun” (The New Objectivity Controversy: Political Literature by Maria Leitner, Joseph Roth, and Irmgard Keun), which has received multiple academic awards.

Her research focuses on twentieth- and twenty-first-century German and Austrian literature, the intersections of literature and politics, and gender- and diversity-informed literary studies.

In her habilitation project, “Politiken der Wut. Literarisches Anger-Management im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert” (Politics of Anger: Literary Anger Management in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries), she brings these research interests into dialogue with approaches from affect theory and media theory. The project has two overarching aims. Firstly, it seeks to illuminate the poetics of rage. Secondly, it aims to deepen our understanding of the contemporary emotionalisation of politics from the perspectives of literary and cultural studies.

Teaching Experience and Teaching Philosophy

Throughout my academic career, I have taught both introductory courses for first-year students, such as Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory, and advanced seminars on different topics, e. g. varying concepts of realism in the interwar period and representations of female anger in literature.

The foundation of my pedagogical approach is predicated upon three fundamental principles. Firstly, the development of students’ academic skills must be balanced with the provision of space for critical thinking and intellectual exploration. Secondly, I consider careful course planning, transparency, and a constructive culture of feedback to be fundamental responsibilities of teaching. Thirdly, in view of the increasing importance of artificial intelligence, my aim is to develop a reflective, discipline-specific and pedagogically sound approach to the use of AI in higher education.
