A Furry Visitor at SeCoSys
15 October 2026
At Bonner IT-Dialog 2026, the booths of the Research Institute Cyber Defence (RI CODE) at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich and B1 Systems GmbH stood right next to each other. Hosted by AFCEA Bonn, the event was held under the motto “Germany’s Resilience Put to the Test”. Representatives from the Bundeswehr, public authorities, organisations with security responsibilities and the security and defence industry discussed civil-military cooperation, hybrid threats, logistics and societal resilience.
The pairing could hardly have been better: on one side, research on cyber defence and secure systems, notably by the SeCoSys group; on the other, B1 Systems’ open-source and Linux expertise. Over both days, numerous conversations developed between the booths, for instance on the role open, sovereign software can play in building resilient IT for the Bundeswehr and public administration.
Today, the professional exchange finally led to a rather furry visit: B1 Systems’ mascot, an impressive Tux penguin, came to see us and immediately made himself comfortable on the CODE cubes. Complete with beret and badge, he also wasted no time in claiming the Digitalisation Centre of the Bundeswehr and Capability Development Cyber and Information Domain (ZDigBw) for himself.
We would like to thank B1 Systems for being such great neighbours and for the lively exchange. And the penguin? He passed his job interview with SeCoSys on the spot with flying colours and is now an official member of the group, complete with a permanent seat on the RI CODE cube. He was already wearing the right headgear, after all.
