At the Plug and Play Germany Summit 2026 on March 10th, industry leaders, startups, and investors gathered to discuss how artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and everyday life. The conversations focused on three emerging domains: physical AI, industrial AI, and conversational AI – each representing a different layer of how intelligence moves from algorithms into the real world. At the Cybersecurity Meetup Munich in February 2026, experts from industry and research discussed the growing importance of combining safety and cybersecurity – especially in complex and safety-critical systems such as space travel. The focus was on different understandings of risk, the challenges of networked systems, and the shift in cybersecurity from a “nice-to-have” to a fundamental requirement for modern technologies.

As part of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2026, numerous side events provided high-profile platforms for exchange, innovation dialogue, and strategic matchmaking. Prof. Dr. Corinna Schmitt took advantage of the opportunity as RI CODE and NCC-DE representative to participate in NATO DIANA's Defense & Security Days 2026, the Munich Security Breakfast 2026, and the MSC Innovation Night, underscoring her role as a catalyst and bridge builder between research, start-ups, industry, and security policy actors. The focus was on current developments in security research, European and transatlantic funding opportunities, and the targeted establishment of resilient innovation networks.

New adjunct professor for Secure Communication Systems

With the appointment of PD Dr. Corinna Schmitt as adjunct professor, the University of the Bundeswehr Munich is placing an important emphasis on the connection between research, teaching, and practical application in the field of cybersecurity and networked communication systems. She has been active in research and teaching on secure communication in heterogeneous multi-domain networks and trustworthy digital infrastructure for many years and heads the Secure Communication Systems (SeCoSys) research group at the Research Institute CODE.

Innovative procurement and cooperation increase joint development potential

On December 3, 2025, the Munich Working Group of Reserve Officers (MAKRO e.V.) organized an exciting panel discussion at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Munich and Upper Bavaria on the topic of “Innovative procurement for the German Armed Forces - navigating the balance between law, technology, and operational reality.” Representatives of the German Armed Forces highlighted the challenges and adjustments that need to be addressed and how rapid contact between the German Armed Forces, industry, and research units can increase the speed of development.

Information exchange across borders

In times of increasing cyber threats and growing dependence on digital infrastructures, strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation in cyberspace has become a strategic priority for governments, armed forces, and industry partners. As NATO allies and EU members with shared security interests, Poland and Germany play an important role in shaping cyber resilience and promoting innovation in the defense sector.

Dual-use is the future – military and civil security research hand in hand

This year's conference of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre Germany (NCC-DE) focused on Europe. Against the backdrop of the current geopolitical situation, the topics of security and digital sovereignty are becoming increasingly important and require prompt action. With its conference in Cologne at the end of October, the NCC-DE provided a platform to support synergies, cooperation, and transfer, and to strengthen Europe through targeted investments and innovations. In addition to numerous presentations, there was also a session on “(EU) funding for research and development,” in which the Research Institute CODE organized one of three breakout sessions.

Europäisches Drohnen Forum: IT- & Cybersecurity zwischen Bedarf und Praktikabilität

Im Rahmen der europäischen Leitmesse und Konferenz für autonome Systeme und Robotik XPONENTIAL Europe, fand am 17. und 18. Februar in Düsseldorf auch das European Drone Forum (EDF) 2025 statt. PD Dr. Corinna Schmitt vom Forschungsinstitut Cyber Defence und Smart Data (CODE) moderierte als Vertreterin des Nationalen Koordinierungszentrums für Cybersicherheit Deutschland (NCC-DE) eine Townhall-Debatte mit dem Titel „Is a proper balance possible? IT- & Cybersecurity in between needs and practicability“. Zu Gast waren Pedro Lousã, COO des portugiesischen Drohenherstellers Beyond Vision und Matthias Gronstedt, CEO der HHLA Sky GmbH in Hamburg.

Intelligent Software as Key to Future Mobility

The DigiTalk organized by the Digitale Stadt München e. V. association at the Collaboration Campus in Holzkirchen was all about the future of mobility. Under the guiding theme of “Intelligent software as the key to the mobility of the future”, experts and interested parties came together to discuss the latest developments, challenges and prospects in this area.

CODE Participation at the InnoVision Kick-off in Vienna

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Military Cyber Centre, the first round of the future-oriented event series “InnoVision”, which is organized by Directorate 6 ICT&Cyber of the Austrian Armed Forces, took place at the National Defence Academy in Vienna. Numerous experts from research, industry and the military exchanged views on topics such as “Artificial intelligence in defense” and “Quantum technology and post-quantum cryptography”.

EU Cybersicherheit: Netzwerktreffen in Neubiberg

Als Teil des deutschen Nationalen Koordinierungszentrums für Cybersicherheit (NKCS / NCC-DE) richtete das Forschungsinstitut Cyber Defence und Smart Data (FI CODE) vom 9. bis 11. Oktober 2024 auf dem Campus der Universität der Bundeswehr München das Netzwerktreffen der Nationalen Koordinierungsstellen für Cybersicherheit (NCCs) sowie die 10. Sitzung des Verwaltungsrats des Europäischen Kompetenzzentrums für Cybersicherheit (ECCC) aus. Organisiert wurde die Veranstaltung in Kooperation mit dem Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), der Kopfstelle des NKCS.

Erfolgreiche Akquise des Digitalprojektes NCC-DE

Im Rahmen einer Ausschreibung des Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) der Europäischen Kommission hat ein Konsortium bestehend aus dem Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), dem Projektträger beim Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. und dem Forschungsinstitut CODE der Universität der Bundeswehr München das Projekt „NCC-DE – Capacity Building for the German National Coordination Centre for Cybersecurity in Industry, Technology and Research“ mit einem Gesamtvolumen von rund zwei Millionen Euro (bei einer Förderquote von 50%) eingeworben.

EDF Projekt NEWSROOM erfolgreich akquiriert

Im Rahmen einer Ausschreibung des European Defence Fund (EDF) Programm der Europäischen Kommission hat ein Konsortium aus drei Universitäten und 14 Industrieunternehmen das Projekt „NEWSROOM – Adapting Cyber Awareness for Evolving Computing Environments“ mit einem Gesamtvolumen von rund zehn Millionen Euro erfolgreich akquiriert. Auch die Universität der Bundeswehr München ist mit dem Forschungsinstitut CODE und der Professur für Wirtschaftsinformatik der Fakultät Informatik als Partner in dieses Projekt involviert.

RFC 9372 publiziert – Gemeinsame Arbeit von DLR und FI CODE

Am 05.11.2019 starteten die Aktivitäten zur IETF-Standardisierung von "L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System (LDACS)" durch das Team Nils Mäurer (DLR), Thomas Gräupl (DLR) und Corinna Schmitt (FI CODE, UniBw M). In zahlreichen IETF-Meetings wurden immer wieder Aktualisierungen des Dokuments vorgestellt und in der Arbeitsgruppe "Reliable and Available Wireless" (RAW) diskutiert. Nun wurde die Arbeit als RFC 9372 veröffentlicht

Die Zukunft des Luftraums gestalten: Projekt AMIUS

Wie muss der urbane Luftraum beschaffen sein, damit in Zukunft Flugtaxis Menschen befördern und Drohnen Medikamente liefern können? Diese Fragestellung liegt dem Verbundprojekt AMIUS (Air Mobility Integration U-Space) innerhalb der Air Mobility Initiative (AMI) zugrunde, an dem das FI CODE der UniBw M beteiligt ist. Im Projekt soll ein erster integrierter bayerischer U-Space geschaffen werden, der die Stadt Ingolstadt mit dem Flughafen Manching verbindet.

Wie cool ist Informatik für Mädchen? FI CODE zeigt dies beim „Mädchen machen Technik“!

Wie jedes Jahr organisiert die Technische Universität München ein Ferienprogramm „Mädchen machen Technik“, mit dem Ziel in mehrtägigen Projekten selbst als Wissenschaftlerin, Forscherin oder Ingenieurin tätig zu werden und dabei viele interessante Experimente durchzuführen. Dieses Jahr hat sich das Forschungsinstitute CODE auch daran beteiligt und ein 2-tägiges Programm unter dem Titel „Von der Idee zum Programm“ für die Altersgruppe 12 - 14 Jahre am 5. und 6. August 2019 organisiert.
