Benedikt Römer pursued studies in the Study of Religions, Arabic, and Public Law at the University of Bayreuth (2013-2016) and in the Study of Religions and Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London (2016-2018). From 2019 to 2022, he was research assistant in the junior research group “Contemporary Islamic Cultures”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) at the University of Bayreuth. In his PhD research, he investigated notions of nationhood and exile among Iranian Evangelical Christians in the diaspora. A book based on this project is forthcoming with the title “Elam in Exile: Religion and Nation among Iranian Christians in the Diaspora”. Alongside his doctoral research, he co-edited the journal “Zeitschrift für junge Religionswissenschaft” (ZjR). In October 2022, Benedikt Römer joined the chair for the Study of Religions with a main focus on Islam at University of the Bundeswehr Munich. His main academic interests include the religious landscape of the Middle East since the 19th century, religion in migratory contexts as well as ethnographic research in Arabic, Turkish and Persian-speaking milieus.
