Why is geodata so important?
Prof. Dr. Otto Heunecke: The designation of flood-prone areas and the planning of flood protection structures, the knowledge of the city relief during controlled blasting of a dud bomb with the expected spread of the shock wave, the assessment of the situation during the deployment of security forces - to name just a few examples - are not possible without the availability of geodata. The more detailed this information is, the more precise the planning, evaluation and risk assessment become.
In Germany, a great deal of such information is available in the form of official geodata, which may need to be expanded to meet specific requirements and applications. The contribution of geodesy to the RISK Research Center lies in the utilization of such potentials.
