The IMCS at the 38th Chemnitz Finite Element Symposium 2025 – On Tour in Mülheim an der Ruhr

22 September 2025

he IMCS was once again represented this year at the traditional Chemnitz Finite Element Symposium, which in 2025 took place “On Tour” in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The mathematics group contributed several presentations to the scientific program.

Thomas Apel gave a talk on “Discretization error estimates for Isogeometric Analysis and domains with corners”, presenting the latest research results that he developed together with Philipp Zilk.

Johannes Pfefferer and Katharina Lorenz delivered a two-part lecture on “Numerical analysis for the Stokes problem with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.” In the first part, Johannes Pfefferer introduced the Weak solutions, while Katharina Lorenz addressed the Very weak solutions in the second part.

A special highlight of the event was the presentation of a printed copy of the special issue of the journal Mathematical Control and Related Fields to Arnd Rösch in honor of his 60th birthday. Thomas Apel served as editor of this volume containing 15 scientific papers, and has also co-authored numerous publications with Arnd Rösch. The handover marked the conclusion of a presentation about Arnd Rösch’s mathematical contributions.

Beyond the scientific talks, participants had the opportunity to join an excursion to the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. During an engaging and lively guided tour, they gained fascinating insights into the industrial history of the region.

A warm thank-you goes to the organizers—especially the team around Arnd Rösch with Nicole Obszanski, Felix Beer, and Niklas Windhuis, as well as Max Winkler from TU Chemnitz—for making this event a success. We are already looking forward to the next symposium, which will take place from September 7 to 9 in Chemnitz!
