New publication on mathematical modelling of lipolysis on lipid droplets
26 März 2026
We are pleased to announce the publication of our article on the mathematical modeling and numerical discretization of lipolysis on lipid droplets. Lipolysis is a life-essential metabolic process that releases fatty acids stored in lipid droplets and thereby supports both the formation of new cells and the provision of cellular energy.
In our work, we present a first mathematical model that reflects an important biological feature of lipolysis, namely that the involved enzymes act in a region near the surface of lipid droplets. We develop and analyze a corresponding system of reaction-diffusion PDEs, establish reliable numerical methods, and show through simulations that enzyme clustering on lipid droplets can significantly slow down the process.
