Abstract:
Background: Climbing and bouldering have a wide range of positive effects on health, both in prevention and rehabilitation. In the past, the reporting of interventions in studies has been critically assessed. Established checklists are now available for such reporting in non-pharmacological interventions in general and exercise or physical training in particular. This review addresses the following question: How is the reporting-quality of climbing and bouldering interventions in prevention and therapy? Methodology: The review was conducted using the Medline (via PubMed) and Scopus databases. The CERT checklist (Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template) was used to assess the reporting of interventions. Results: Initially, 818 studies were identified, and, after a step-by-step review, 40 studies were included in this review. Thirty-three of these studies were in the field of therapy (somatic diseases: n=18, mental illnesses and behavioural disorders: n=15) and 7 studies had healthy participants. Conclusion: The results provide insight into the reporting of climbing and bouldering interventions in prevention and therapy. Overall, the reporting is mixed, with the heterogeneity between the individual studies potentially being masked by the dichotomous assessment in the CERT checklist. Overall, there are indications of differences, especially with regard to individual items and when illnesses are considered separately in therapy.
