The re-use of research data is playing a growing role in almost all areas of science and especially in third-party funded research. The major national and international sponsors demand that when planning a project proposal, consideration should be given to whether and which of the research data resulting from a project can be relevant for other research contexts and how this research data can be made available to other scientists for subsequent use. The Good Scientific Practice additionally requires the retention of research data for at least 10 years.

Which Research Data Is Stored?

Research data includes, among other things, measurement data, laboratory values, audio-visual information, texts, survey data, objects from collections or samples that are developed or evaluated in scientific work. Methodical test procedures such as questionnaires, software and simulations can also be key results of scientific research and should therefore also be referred to as research data.

How Is Research Data Stored?

The university's data center offers a variety of solutions for the storage and active use of research data, ranging from shared use to highly available centralized data storage, systems for version management, Sync&Share and long-term archiving systems.

In addition, data in certain formats (e. g. texts, videos, audio files) can also be stored and archived in the AtheneForschung database.

How Do I Find Discipline-Specific Repositories of Research Data?

In addition to archiving the data in the repositories of UniBw M, it is also possible to archive research data in repositories specific to the discipline. An overview of research data repositories is provided by the Registry of Research Data Repositories, re3data, which is funded by the DFG and offered as a service by DataCite.

How Is Data Protection Guaranteed?

The university's data center provides comprehensive tools in the areas of IT security and data protection to secure information security on the basis of availability, confidentiality and integrity. In addition to the classic network requirements, this also includes special solutions such as extended access protection and encryption of sensitive data on end devices.

How Can Research Data Be Published?

When publishing all these types of research data, the first thing to do is to make the data retrievable - regardless of the solution chosen to store the data. This is guaranteed by the collection of metadata that describes the research data professionally. The University Library provides a complete support of the metadata schema of DataCite (https://www.datacite.org/) on AtheneResearch.

Published research data should also be unambiguously quotable by assigning a persistent identifier, such as a DOI. The university library is a registered DOI data centre and therefore offers all university members the possibility to allocate a DOI for their publications. This applies in particular to research data.
