ECOC 2025: September 28 to October 2, 2025: Copenhagen, Denmark. Prof. Carmen Mas Machuca participated in the 51st European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), where she presented a workshop titled “Energy Consumption in Converged In-Building Networks.”

Women in Photonics 2025: October 1, 2025: Copenhagen, Denmark. Prof. Carmen Mas Machuca participated in the Women in Photonics Workshop at ECOC 2025, themed “Women of Wavelengths (WoW) – Voices from Women in Photonics.” The event celebrated the achievements of women in optics, photonics, and optical networks through inspiring talks and a panel discussion featuring leading researchers and innovators from around the world.

ICCE 2025: September 7th: ICCE took place in Berlin, and the program included a panel on Women in Engineering (WIE). Prof. Mas-Machuca gave a presentation and participated in the panel. The event was sponsored by IEEE Germany section and was moderated by Prof. M. Nawito, ICCE TPC Chair.

IRO Chile: August 2025: Prof. Mas-Machuca visited three universities of the IRO optical association: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) hosted by Prof. Leiva, Adolfo Ibáñez University hosted by Prof. Borquez Paredes, and Federico Santa María Technical University hosted by Prof. Jara and Prof. Olivares. The visit included research discussion on several topics such as business models in optical access deployment in rural areas, SOA in multimode fibers, etc.

ICTON 2025: July 6th to 10th: Our group took part of the 25th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON) in Barcelona, Spain. In this event, the group presented 5 different works assessing access networks and resilience (Ms. Ritanshi Agarwal, Mr. Cristian Bermudez), and core networks and security (Prof. Carmen Mas-Machuca, Mr. Christofer Vásquez). All the presentations were very well received and a lot of excellent feedback was given by the attendees.

6G Conference: July 1st to 3rd: Mr. Cristian Bermudez attended the 6G conference in Berlin, Germany. This event was one of the milestones for the FRONT-RUNNER project. Mr. Bermudez presented a poster at the FRONT-RUNNER booth, highlighting the contributions on security and programmability in Pasive Optical Networks.

OECC/PSC 2025: June 29th to July 3rd: Prof. Mas-Machuca, was invited to participate in the OECC/PSC conference, hosted in Sapporo, Japan to give a presentation titled “Towards Resilient and Secure QKD networks”. This work aimed at evaluating and improving the security of QKD networks as well as the key availability.

Front Runner Meeting: June 11th to 12th: Our group took part of the Front Runner plenary meeting hosted by Adtran in Meiningen. During the meeting, the results and demos from the different partners were shown and discussed. Special attention was given on the preparation of the project in the 6G Conference in Berlin.

RNDM 2025 workshop: June 9th to 11th: Dr. Anjali Sharma participated in the “International Workshop on Resilient Networks Design and Modeling” (RNDM 2025), where she presented her work on “Comparative Analysis of Type-C Approaches in Protected PON”.
RNDM annually hosts high-quality papers in the field of resiliency and survivability for network planning, modeling, and design. The 2025 edition of RNDM took place in Trondheim, Norway, hosted by NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), and chaired by Prof. Poul Heegaard and Prof. Jacek Rak. EuCNC 2025 Conference: June 3th to 6th: Ms. Ritanshi Agarwal, participated in the EuCNC conference, hosted in Poznan, Poland. There she exhibited the Demo “Resilient Passive Optical Network Planning Tool”, a software that allows the planning of different access network topologies, according to the selected area and the desired protection scheme. She exhibited this tool for the whole duration of the conference obtaining both exposure and excellent feedback.

VDE ITG Conference on Photonic Networks 2025: May 20th to 21st: Mr. Cristian Bermudez-Serna and Ms. Ritanshi Agarwal, participated in the Fachtagung Photonische Netzte 2025, hosted by Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin. In this event, Mr. Bermudez-Serna gave a presentation titled “Dependability Analysis Between Optical Access and Power Grid Networks”, and Ms. Agarwal presented a poster titled “Towards Unbalanced Splitter Deployment in Passive Optical Networks”.
Both works received great feedback, accomplishing the objective of the conference. We thank Fraunhofer HHI, for the organization and the hosting of the event. |

ONDM 2025 Conference: May 6th to 9th, 2025: Prof. C. Mas Machuca, Dr. A. Sharma and Ms. R. Agarwal, participated at the ONDM conference in Pisa, Italy. The team organized the “Connectivity Spectrum: Women driving research and innovation in optical networks” workshop and gave two technical presentations: “Exploring Energy-Efficient PON Architectures for Rural Scenarios” (Ms. Agarwal); and “Routing, Band, Modulation and Spectrum Assignment with Dedicated Protection in Multiband-Elastic Optical Networks” (Dr. Sharma). Last but not least, Prof. C, Mas Machuca announced ONDM 2026, which will be hosted next year at the Universität of the Bundeswehr München.

Best Paper Award ONDM 2025: May 9th, 2025: Dr. Anjali Sharma, post-doctoral student of the Communications Network Chair (COMNET), received the Best Paper Award for the paper “Routing, Band, Modulation, and Spectrum Assignment with Dedicated Protection in Multiband-Elastic Optical Networks”. This work presented different protection schemes, under a multi-band scenario, and proved which type was more effective in different Core network topologies.

IEEE Women in Engineering ONDM 2025: May 8th, 2025: Prof. C. Mas Machuca and Dr. A. Sharma organized the workshop “Connectivity Spectrum: Women driving research and innovation in optical networks” at ONDM 2025. The event counted with invited speakers, who shared their remarkable experiences, achievements, their outlook on equality, and some thought-provoking ideas in the workshop. Audience participated in a poll curated around to discover their understanding on the topic. The workshop was followed by a coffee break sponsored by IEEE Women in Engineering Germany section.

OFC Conference: March 30th to April 3rd, 2025: Dr. Anjali Sharma and Ms. Ritanshi Agarwal, members of the Communications Network Chair (COMNET), participated at the OFC conference, hosted in San Francisco, California, USA. This conference brings together world-wide experts in business and academia to share and discuss on new findings and technologies in Optical Fiber Communications.
