Wargaming in Homeland Defense
The Homeland Defense Division faces complex challenges due to its diverse core mission, which includes protecting Germany's territorial integrity, protecting critical infrastructure, supporting civil authorities, and providing host nation support.
One special feature is the large number of reservists in the homeland security companies. These reservists must dealwith the very complex challenges of asymmetric warfare and the operation of irregular forces in their own area of responsibility, particularly in a national defense scenario. This leads to two central problems:
- Training: Reservists must be prepared and trained for a broad and complex range of missions, but very little training time is available.
- Resource management: The limited size of the available forces requires optimal and profitable mission management in terms of space and time.
The project investigates the extent to which wargaming is a suitable means of meeting these challenges. The focus is on two areas:
- Educational wargaming for the efficient and time-saving preparation of reservists.
- The analysis of optimal force allocation and decision-making by commanders in an national defense scenario.
