Prof. Eirini Ntoutsi gave a talk at the Departmental Seminar of the Statistics Department at LMU on Socio-Economic Parity in AI Systems.
The talk was based on our recent FAccT 2025 paper on socio-economic fairness in AI systems. The presentation examined how existing fairness-aware learning approaches, while effective at mitigating demographic disparities, may still disproportionately benefit socio-economically privileged individuals. It further discussed Socio-Economic Parity (SEP) and Conditional Socio-Economic Parity (CSEP), two fairness notions that explicitly account for socio-economic disadvantage and effort in fairness-aware allocation.
The work contributes to the ongoing discussion on responsible AI and the operationalization of fairness in socio-economically sensitive domains, particularly in light of emerging regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act.
