Master's program

The potential of modern concrete technology, the properties of supplementary and alternative binders and the deterioration caused despite or even due to the more and more complex building technology are topics dealt with within the master's program at the Institute for Construction Materials.

The module “Mineral binders and concrete technology” starts in the Fall quarter and continues in the winter quarter. The class “Damage and deterioration mechanisms” is given in the fall quarter and forms a part of the module “Construction in existing context – Building constructions".

Documents for "Mineral binders and concrete technology"

The module is based upon the relevant content of the bachelor classes. It deals in detail with the production of various supplementary binders, their properties and concrete technological advantages and disadvantages related to the latter. Well established supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) are fly ash from coal power stations, silica fume and granulated blast furnace slag. In addition there are alternative SCM such as the globally highly interesting calcined clays. The concrete technological impact of these materials and their ecological potential will be dealt with.
The bandwidth of today’s concretes is enormous. They are tailor-made for various applications. Lectures within the module illuminate the differences in mix design and mixing itself ranging from extremely light lightweight concrete to self-compacting, high strength and fiber-containing up to ultra-high performance concretes. The knowledge gained during the lectures will be transferred in the laboratory into own concrete mixes. Subsequent tests on hardened concrete specimens will yield a further insight into the properties of the various concretes and their mechanical behavior.

Documents “Damage and deterioration mechanisms”

Damages and deterioration occur in each individual phase during the lives span of a structure. Legal terms will be explained in the course of the class such as overhauls and maintenance. Various methods are at hand for judging them. They will be dealt with in detail. The necessary effort will be discussed and the competence needed for evaluating the results as well as their potential quality and which conclusion can be drawn at all from the individual methods. Historical case studies and actual examples will be discussed and analyzed within the course of “Damage and deterioration mechanisms”.
