Short bio

Prof. Dr.  Mark Manulis is Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Universität der Bundeswehr München. Since 2022 he is a member of the Research Institute CODE where he heads the PACY lab for Privacy and Applied Cryptography. 

His research is on privacy-enhancing technologies underpinned by modern cryptographic methods and techniques. He has been working on the design and analysis of cryptographic protocols and on their use to protect security and privacy of users, data, and communications, with applications to web/cloud, social media, IoT, blockchain, and new space.  His research foci include protocols for secure processing of encrypted and distributed data, functional/attribute-based encryption and  signature schemes, privacy-preserving authentication and key management protocols, protocols for private messaging,  and privacy-enhancing cryptography for decentralised multi-party applications.

Before joining the Universität der Bundeswehr München in 2022, Mark Manulis spent 10 years at the University of Surrey in the UK, where he started as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. In 2014, he helped to co-found Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS) and became its deputy director. In 2020, he was appointed as the Head of Department and promoted to Reader. From 2009 until 2012 he was Juniorprofessor at the TU Darmstadt and principal investigator in two research centres that preceded Germany's National Centre for Applied Cybersecurity (ATHENE). He remained Visiting Professor at the TU Darmstadt until 2015. Mark Manulis obtained his Dr.-Ing. degree in Information Security from the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany and spent over a year as a postdoctoral researcher in the cryptography group at the Universite catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He holds Diploma and MSc degrees in Computer Science from the TU Braunschweig, Germany.

Mark Manulis is an active member of the international cryptologic research community. His publication track record includes some 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading international security venues. He received Best Paper awards from ISC 2016 and InTrust 2014. He was program chair of ISC 2018 and ACNS 2016, general chair of CANS 2012 and PKC 2012, workshop chair at ESORICS 2020, and organiser of the Dagstuhl-Seminar on Privacy-Oriented Cryptography in 2012. He has been involved in over 70 program committees of international conferences. He is associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security and Springer's International Journal of Information Security. He also served on editorial boards of IET Information Security and Elsevier's Computer Communications . He is a member of IACR and IEEE.
