UrbaSiM - Urban Security in Munich

The protection of public spaces from terrorist threats represents a particular challenge for cities and communities. In recent years, devastating attacks have been carried out, particularly with vehicles. The attack on the Christmas market at Berlin's Breitscheidplatz on December 19, 2016 is the best-known example. Although the corona pandemic significantly reduced the intensity of public life in 2020, another rampage was committed in Trier on December 1, 2020, in which five people died and 24 were injured, some seriously. Protection against such attacks with structural measures is the focus of the UrbaSiM project. The BauProtect research group provides scientific advice to the district administration department of the state capital of Munich. Structural, preferably multifunctional solutions are sought that fit into the urban design in an architecturally appealing way and unobtrusively unfold their protective potential without drawing attention to the dangers. To this end, the team accompanies the development of the hazard and risk analysis and examines, among other things, the possible uses of street furniture or uncovered city streams as barriers.
