Motivation

Additive manufacturing is interesting for lightweight construction for a variety of reasons. These include material savings, the possibility of manufacturing complex geometries and material diversity (see additive manufacturing). For this reason, the Institute for Lightweight Construction is also part of the UniBw-wide project "FLAB-3Dprint", which is funded by the dtec.bw - Center for Digitization and Technology Research of the German Armed Forces. The motivation of this research project can be found in the following:

"FLAB-3Dprint stands for the association of highly qualified scientists of UniBw M and WIWeB with a unique high-tech research laboratory to jointly bring additive manufacturing and its applications forward.

Additive manufacturing techniques are attractive methods that can be used to produce geometrically complex components from materials with specifically adjustable material properties and offer considerable potential for applications in all civilian and military industries as well as in medicine. There are numerous professorships at UniBw M that are active in this field, cooperating with the Bundeswehr Center of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing at WIWeB in Erding and conducting joint research using synergies within the framework of FLAB-3Dprint.

In order to expand the expertise of UniBw M in this innovative field, to gear the training of soldiers and students in technical subjects to the future and to generate a unique selling point in the national and international university landscape, the state-of-the-art research laboratory FLAB-3Dprint will be established on campus. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities as well as technical and scientific staff and will cover the material classes metals, plastics and ceramics."
