Close to the Austrian border, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a lovely small town famous for a variety of winter sports. You can visit the ski-jump, part of the Four Hills Tournament (Vierschanzen-Tournee), where the competition traditionally takes place in New Year's day. The old city hosts a number of traditional timbered houses, and you can also go for a short hike in the Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm), 700 m long and 80 m deep. Nearby you can find as well Germany's highest mountain: the Zugspitze.
