Biometrics for Defence and Law Enforcement
Biometric recognition is now widespread both for commercial applications and in law enforcement. Some examples include the use of biometrics recognition to log into electronic devices or online banking, for border control, and to limit access to restricted areas. More recently, armed forces have also increased their use of biometric recognition internally, for instance to limit access to facilities or particular systems, for targeting, or in further applications such as within the wider field of battlefield forensics.
The Biometrics and Machine Learning (BioML) research group of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBwM), in cooperation with the European Association for Biometrics (EAB), will host a workshop on June 1 to 3, 2026, to discuss the current status of biometrics for defence and law enforcement, focusing on technical aspects and open challenges (e.g., attacks on biometric systems or privacy leaks). We invite all stakeholders, including academia, government agencies, LEAs, defence personnel, and industry, to participate in this event and help us pave the way forward for a more secure society using biometric recognition!
Workshop dates: June 1 to 3, 2026
