Detection of high-speed impacts caused by very small particles

Seamless Radio Access Networks for Internet of Space (SeRANIS for short) is the world's first and only small satellite mission that provides a publicly accessible multifunctional experimental laboratory in orbit and is being developed by UniBW M. One part of this mission is the laboratory unit 3.2 "Resilience" with the experiment "Structural Event Monitoring". The primary objective of the experiment is to use a network of acceleration sensors to detect singular events such as collision events with micrometeorites and space debris during regular operation of the satellite in low-Earth orbit.

Novel algorithms for the detection of such singular events are to be tested and evaluated as part of a final thesis. For this purpose you should:

  • research the state of the art with regard to detection algorithms,
  • implement a selection of algorithms in a common programming language (e.g. MATLAB, Python, C##)
  • evaluate the detection performance of selected algorithms on simulation data.

You should have:

  • Interest in topics of signal processing, vibration analysis, numerical optimization
  • Interest in programming (e.g. Matlab and/or Python, can also be learned as part of the work)
