Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Michael Schmitt

Michael Schmitt is full professor for Earth observation at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of Bundeswehr University Munich. Before, he was a professor for applied geodesy and remote sensing at the Department of Geoinformatics of Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS). Due to his habilitation in 2018, he has also been an Adjunct Teaching Professor at the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since March 2019.

Before joining MUAS, he was a senior researcher at the Signal Processing in Earth Observation (SiPEO) lab, a joint venture of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In summer 2016, he was a guest scientist at the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Before joining SiPEO, Michael Schmitt worked as interim Chair manager and deputy of the professor at the Chair for Remote Sensing Technology (Prof. Richard Bamler), also a TUM-DLR joint venture, and as scientific staff member at Prof. Uwe Stilla’s Professorship for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at TUM.

Michael Schmitt's technical passion is Earth observation, i.e. with his team he develops methods for the extraction of geospatial information from different kinds of remote sensing data. For this purpose, techniques from fields such as signal/image processing, machine learning or data fusion are used.
