Brief profile
Michaela Geierhos has been Professor of Data Science at the CODE Research Institute and the Institute for Data Security at the Faculty of Computer Science since April 1, 2020. Before her appointment at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Michaela Geierhos was Professor of Digital Cultural Studies from October 2017 to March 2020 and Junior Professor of Information Systems, in particular Semantic Information Processing, at the University of Paderborn from January 2013 to September 2017. Prior to this, she worked as a research assistant at the Center for Information and Language Processing at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 2006 to 2012, where she completed her doctorate summa cum laude in 2010. This was followed by her habilitation and authorization to teach computational linguistics in 2016.
Her research is generally located at the interface between computational linguistics and computer science. Practical problems of machine language processing are always dealt with in concrete application scenarios. The focus is on the development of algorithms for text, audio and image analysis as well as human-machine communication through interaction via information systems (e.g. question-answer systems).
Michaela Geierhos is currently a reviewer for the European Commission, the project management organization VDI/VDE Innovation+Technik and the DAAD as well as for numerous conferences and journals. Since October 2024, she has been head of the “German Biography“ of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
She has already received several awards for her achievements in research and teaching, including the Best Reviewer Award and several Best Paper Awards. In 2013, she was named Professor of the Year by UNICUM in the Computer Science category and received the Paderborn University Research Prize. Other awards include the Förderpreis der Gesellschaft für Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft (2012) and the Preis für gute Lehre an bayerischen Universitäten (2010).
Since November 2021, Michaela Geierhos is also the Technical Director of the Research Institute CODE.
