Transportation and spatial planning represent important, promising fields of activity for civil engineers. They form a focal point in the specialization "Environment and infrastructure". The institute's mission statement is the interdisciplinary, system-oriented development of sustainable settlement and traffic structures with innovative planning and management methods as well as plant and operating technology.

Teaching

The courses impart specialist knowledge and methodical skills in traffic planning, -technology and -economy, in particular with regard to road and air traffic facilities, traffic infrastructure engineering and -safety, railway traffic facilities and -operation as well as public transport, and on the other hand in spatial and environmental planning, planning organization and -methodology as well as system design and project management.

Research

Current fields of research in the transport sector include road maintenance management, road design, asphalt production and pavement technology, line management of rail-bound traffic systems, public transport offer design, model application in traffic planning and rail transport as well as airport planning. Research projects in spatial planning aim at the coordinated, sustainable development of settlements, open space and infrastructure with the help of innovative planning instruments and management methods.
