Dr. Caroline Mezger ist Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Zeitgeschichte (IfZ) in München, wo sie im Rahmen des Förderprogramms „Leibniz - Beste Köpfe: Leibniz- Junior Research Groups“ das Projekt „'Man hört, man spricht': Informal Communication and Information 'From Below' in Nazi Europe“ (INFOCOM) leitet. 

Nach Studienabschlüssen in Geschichte an der Yale University (New Haven, USA) und der Central European University (Budapest, Ungarn) promovierte sie 2016 am Europäischen Hochschulinstitut (Florenz, Italien). Anfang 2017 nahm sie ihre Tätigkeit als Historikerin am IfZ beim Zentrum für Holocaust-Studien auf. Ihre Forschung befasst sich mit der Geschichte des Zweiten Weltkriegs, des Nationalsozialismus und des Holocaust; der transnationalen Geschichte Mittel-, Ost- und Südosteuropas im 20. Jahrhundert; der Geschichte der Kindheit und Jugend; Minderheitenfragen und Nationalismus in Europas Grenzgebieten; (Zwangs-) Migration; und der Geschichte der Kommunikation.

Sie ist Mitherausgeberin des Bandes „The Holocaust in the Borderlands: Interethnic Relations and the Dynamics of Violence in Occupied Eastern Europe“, European Holocaust Studies Band 2 (2019) und Autorin des Buches Forging Germans: Youth, Nation, and the National Socialist Mobilization of Ethnic Germans in Yugoslavia, 1918-1944 (Oxford University Press, 2020).
