EU Cybersecurity: Networking Event in Neubiberg

As part of the German National Cybersecurity Coordination Center (NCC-DE), the Research Institute CODE hosted the network meeting of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centers (NCC) and the 10th meeting of the Governing Board of the European Center of Competence for Cybersecurity (ECCC) from October 9 to 11, 2024, on the campus of the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich. The event was organized in cooperation with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the lead agency of the NKCS.

Over the course of the three days, a total of approximately 120 participants from the 27 EU member states, Norway, and Iceland gathered on the campus of the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich. The first day was opened by Lauri Tankler, Chair of the NCC network. Luca Tagliaretti, Executive Director of the European Center of Competence for Cybersecurity (ECCC), and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Hommel, Executive Director of RI CODE, then welcomed the participants. In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Hommel particularly highlighted the consortium structure of the NCC-DE and emphasized the role that RI CODE plays in this context. He noted that RI CODE’s research creates added value not only for the Bundeswehr but also for European society as a whole.

The rest of the NCC Network Day program included not only presentations by the European Commission, the ECCC, and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), but also numerous group sessions during which NCC representatives had the opportunity to network and, among other things, share their experiences regarding the implementation of the Digital Europe Program (DEP) at the national level. At the end of the day, Lauri Tankler of the NCC Estonia was re-elected by the representatives of the National Coordination Centers to serve as chair of the NCC Network. Two new vice chairs were also elected, from Luxembourg and Iceland.

Over the next two days, on October 10 and 11, the ECCC Governing Board meeting took place, bringing together representatives from the EU member states, Norway, and Iceland to discuss and decide on the future direction of the DEP for the period 2025 to 2027. As part of this process, six working groups were established to continue discussing and supporting the further development of the DEP in the future.
