We congratulate Maximilian Garsch on his PhD

19 September 2023

Maximilian Garsch, who worked as a research assistant at our institute, successfully defended his PhD thesis on September 19, 2023. We congratulate him most sincerely!

The title of his thesis is:

"Tauglichkeit von Smartphones zur Schwingungsmessung. Systemidentifizierung und Beurteilung von Brücken"
("Suitability of smartphones for vibration measurement. System identification and assessment of bridges")

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Norbert Gebbeken (University of the Bundeswehr, Munich) Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Thomas Haenselmann (Mittweida University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Fischer  (TUM School of Engineering and Design) acted as reviewers for this PhD thesis.

This PhD thesis addresses the question of whether commercially available smartphones (or tablets) are capable of accurately determining the acceleration values and natural frequencies of bridge structures, and whether the sensitivity of the sensors is sufficient to reproducibly measure the comparatively small dynamic responses of a structure, using theoretical and experimental vibration measurements. To this end, laboratory tests, measurements on a test bridge at the UniBwM (for which very precise data already exists), and measurements on a real structure will be carried out using various devices (Android operating system).
