SORTIE - Sensor systems for locating buried people in collapsed buildings

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes or tsunamis as well as extraordinary events (e.g. gas explosions) are the most common causes of the complete or partial collapse of buildings worldwide. The survivors are usually trapped by heavy debris or the way out is blocked. Due to the uncertain load-bearing capacity of the rubble structure, the disaster scene also poses a major risk for rescue workers during their rescue work. In order to increase the chances of survival for the victims and the safety of the emergency services after such disasters, the BMBF joint research project SORTIE (sensor systems for localization of people buried in collapsed buildings) in the sub-project "Structural Analysis of the Debris Field" (project manager: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Norbert Gebbeken (EE), research group BauProtect) at the RISK Research Center. Innovative methods from the fields of remote sensing, computer vision, artificial intelligence and civil engineering are used in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary context. The main result of this sub-project should make it possible in the future to generate a digital twin of the rubble heap according to BIM technology, to estimate the risk of collapse quantitatively and thus to make the rescue process safer and more efficient.

Visit of Mr. Subham Banore (IITD)

Mr. Subham Banore from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi visited the RISK research center and the research group BauProtect at the University of the Bundeswehr. The reason of the visit was the Indo-German cooperation in the SORTIE BMBF research project Sensor Systems for Localization of Trapped Victims in Collapsed Infrastructure (external Link)

Mr. Banore is working in the group of Prof. Vasant Matsagar at IITD.
SORTIE partners are grateful for this cooperation.
