Fatigue strength

The lecture Fatigue Strength is intended as a specialisation for those students who are mainly concerned with lightweight structures. The main focus is on the failure behaviour of materials under vibrational stress. This includes the life prediction of components with simple component geometry under operational stress. Both linear damage accumulation concepts (Miner hypothesis) and alternative concepts based on crack propagation calculations are used for life prediction.
In the last section life time predictions based on statistical methods are discussed. For this purpose, the evaluation of material parameters (e.g. service life) is carried out with statistical tools and, based on this, probabilities of failure are determined. The aim of the lecture is to re-evaluate criteria for material maintenance with respect to service life and materials.
