Public Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) are being offered in many locations world-wide, determing so-called hot-spots; moving away from the free access to a commercialized access scheme, which requires charging for the service utilized. However, competing offers from different providers may differ in quality or the quality-usability ratio due to reduced Quality-of-Service (QoS). Therefore, it is essential to combine a technology-wise efficient, a fair, and an open access and rating scheme, enabling users and providers to interact based on their respective incentives to behave as negotiated initially before accessing the WLAN. The project integrates a full-fledged RADIUS protocol-based AAA infrastructe, extends this with a charging functionality based on LDAP directory information for new user and registered ones. Finally, a reputation system for the service seen and experienced enables users and providers to provide their views on the respective service. Due to this approach, clear incentives and security mechanisms are applied to have a medium to long-term reputation for both parties. Such a management and accounting integration offers a variety of additional functionality being based on standard protocols and mechanisms.
