Matthias Mayr successfully completes habilitation in computational mechanics

6 März 2026

The Institute for Mathematics and Computer-Based Simulation warmly congratulates its Scientific Laboratory Head Dr.-Ing. Matthias Mayr on the successful completion of his habilitation in the field of Computational Mechanics. During a small ceremonial event this week, he received the authorization to teach and the venia legendi from the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Prof. Silja Hoffman, and is now entitled to use the title Privatdozent (PD).

With his habilitation, Matthias demonstrates his exceptional academic qualification in research and teaching. In the German-speaking university system, the habilitation is considered the highest academic qualification and confirms the ability to independently represent a scientific discipline in both research and teaching. The habilitation process usually includes an extensive habilitation thesis or an equivalent body of published research, a review procedure conducted by experts in the field, and a public academic lecture at the university.

In Matthias’s case, the habilitation process was accompanied by a mentoring committee consisting of the following members:

  • Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Popp, University of the Bundeswehr Munich
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Michael Brünig, University of the Bundeswehr Munich
  • Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang A. Wall, Technical University Munich

Matthias has been part of our institute since 2018. He initially joined as a postdoctoral researcher and, since the end of 2020, has held the position of Scientific Laboratory Head, becoming an integral part of our team in both research and teaching.

We warmly congratulate Matthias on this important academic milestone and wish him continued success in his future academic career.
