CSE Colloquium talk by Fadi Aldakheel

On February 27, 2026, the second lecture of this year’s Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) research colloquium continued the annual lecture series. As part of the series organized by Professors Apel, Gerke, Kiendl, and Popp, the IMCS welcomed Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Fadi Aldakheel from the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Numerical Mechanics (IBNM) at Leibniz University Hannover. In his presentation entitled “Physics-based machine learning for computational failure mechanics” he introduced innovative approaches that combine physics-based modeling with machine learning methods to describe failure mechanisms.

The lecture met with great interest: with more than 40 attendees, the event was very well received. The subsequent discussion and Q&A session highlighted the audience’s strong engagement with the presented concepts. Prof. Aldakheel had been invited to the IMCS by Alexander Popp and, during his stay, also served as a reviewer in a doctoral examination procedure.

The CSE colloquium is held on a regular basis. Invitations to the respective lectures are distributed in advance via email. Workshop in Udine Strengthens German–Italian Collaboration

IMCS was actively represented at the 3rd German–Italian GACM–GIMC Workshop in Udine, where Alexander Popp co-organized the event and, together with Sebastian Brandstaeter, presented current research on mixed-dimensional modelling and probabilistic analyses in computational mechanics.

New preprint published on arXiv

The new preprint “Experimental and numerical study of the transient response of a cantilever beam with a piezoelectric disc sensor” by Radek Kolman, Robert Cimrman, Ladislav Musil, Moritz Frey, Jaromír Kylar, Sebastian Brandstaeter, Vojtěch Kotek, Alexander Popp, and Jan Kober is now available on arXiv.
