Prof. Dr. phil. Michaela Geierhos

has been Professor for Data Science at the Research Institute CODE (Cyber Defense) and the Institute of Data Security of the Department of Computer Science since 1 April 2020.

Before her appointment to the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Michaela Geierhos was Professor for Digital Humanities from October 2017 to March 2020 and from January 2013 to September 2017 Assistant Professor for Business Computing, especially Semantic Information Processing, at Paderborn University. Prior to that, she was a research assistant at the Center for Information and Language Processing (CIS) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 2006 to 2012 and received her doctorate summa cum laude at the same place in 2010. In 2016 she habilitated and was awarded the teaching qualification for computational linguistics.

Prof. Geierhos’ research is generally taking place at the interface between computational linguistics and computer science. For this purpose, practical problems in machine speech processing are always dealt with in specific industry-related application scenarios. Tasks of practical computational linguistics include the development of algorithms for (semantic) text analysis and the enabling of communication between man and machine by interaction via information systems (e.g. information retrieval, question answering). Practical applications include search engines, social media mining systems, sentiment analysis and knowledge-based question answering.

Michaela Geierhos is a reviewer for the European Commission, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (including the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award) as well as for numerous conferences and journals. Since 03/2014 she is an elected member of the advisory board of the "Deutsche Biographie" by the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

For her achievements in research and teaching, she has received several awards in the past, including the Best Reviewer Award at EMNLP 2018, the Best Paper Award at ICIST 2017, and ISI-SoftTech 2012. In 2013 she was awarded Professor of the Year in the category Computer Science by UNICUM.
