Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Paul

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Paul

has been Professor for Electrical Power Grids and High Voltage Engineering at the Department of Electrical Power Systems and Information Technology since July 2025.

Christian Paul studied electrical engineering, information technology and computer engineering at RWTH Aachen University. The university honored him with the Springorum Commemorative Coin for completing his studies with a focus on high-voltage engineering. Subsequently, he worked as a research assistant at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich in the fields of lightning research, lightning detection, and the development and testing of lightning and surge protection components in the high-voltage and high-current laboratory. During this time, he completed his doctorate in engineering and produced almost 20 scientific publications, which were presented at conferences and published in renowned national and international journals. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the ITIS e.V. research prize. Furthermore, his doctoral thesis was honored with the prestigious Bayern Award of the VDE e.V. Christian Paul then completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on leadership as part of a distance learning course.

Following his time at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, he turned his attention to the practical realization of the energy transition, taking up a position at the transmission system operator TransnetBW. In this role he worked in the field of grid expansion and held management positions dealing with interdisciplinary technical issues relating to the construction and operation of transformer substations and transmission overhead lines. As a certified technical project manager (PM Professional), he was most recently responsible for the entire technical area in one of the largest German infrastructure projects in the field of grid expansion.

In July 2025, Christian Paul took up the Professorship for Electrical Power Grids and High Voltage Engineering at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. In addition to traditional basic research in high-voltage and high-current technology, his research priorities include electrical engineering applications and the further development of innovative and insulating materials. He will place a particular focus on the theoretical and experimental investigation of lightning and surge protection. Furthermore, issues relating to the operation and expansion of the electrical energy network will be a central part of his research. In his lectures, Prof. Paul will share his experience from engineering and scientific practice in addition to engineering fundamentals.

Christian Paul is a member of the technical committee of the ABB at VDE e.V. and a member of the program committee of ABB’s lightning protection conference.

Welcome, Professor Paul!
