The UK Academic Career Path: understanding the system and planning an academic career

28. 11. 2019 | 09.30 Uhr - 16.30 Uhr

The University of Cambridge and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Muenchen co-organize the one-day workshop The UK Academic Career Path: understanding the system and planning an academic career targeted to late stage PhD students and postdoctoral researchers aiming to pursue an academic career in UK.

The workshop is divided into two parts. The morning lecture will provide an overview on the UK academic sector.  It will shed light on the types, numbers and diversity of higher education institutions in the UK; how research is funded; how higher education institutions are measured for teaching and research; and how you can use this information to plan an academic career in the UK. Prof. Dr. Barbara Ercolano will close the morning lecture by reporting on her experience as postdoctoral researcher at University of Cambridge, taking on a professorship at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Muenchen in 2010. At LMU she continued her collaboration with her old supervisor in Cambridge in the frame of the LMU-Cambridge Strategic Partnership.

The afternoon session will offer practical training and coaching for successfully applying to an academic position in UK. This session will look at what each part of an academic application – CV, cover letter, research and teaching statement – should include to make your application stand out to a selection panel.
