Funding for Funders

More and more students, academic staff and professors are planning to establish a company from the Bundeswehr University Munich. The direct step into self-employment has advantages and disadvantages and also harbours financial risks. In order to make it easier to get started, however, numerous initiatives support such projects.

Funding for Entrepreneurs

As part of the start-up support, grants are offered in the form of e.g. scholarships, competitions and advisory support.

EXIST Business Start-up Grant

The EXIST Business Start-up Grant is a funding programme of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF).

The EXIST Business Start-up Grant scholarship supports founders from universities who want to implement a knowledge-based start-up idea. Half of the studies should have already been completed and the graduation of graduates and former research assistants may not be more than five years ago. Teams of founders may consist of three persons and are only supported in exceptional cases if the majority consists of students.

The start-up project should be innovative and technology-oriented. EXIST supports ideas from the manufacturing industry and services that are based on scientific findings. The maximum funding period is one year.

EXIST Transfer of Research

The EXIST Transfer of Research programme is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF).

EXIST Transfer of Research supports outstanding research-based start-up projects that involve complex and risky development work.

The funding programme consists of two funding phases

In the first funding phase, research results that have the potential to form the basis for setting up a company are to be further developed. The aim is to carry out the development work to clarify fundamental questions of translating scientific results into technical products and processes, to develop the business idea based on this idea into a business plan and to prepare the planned company foundation in a targeted manner.

In funding phase I, personnel costs can be financed for a maximum of four staff positions as well as material costs (consumer goods, consumables, capital goods, industrial property rights, market research and the awarding of contracts and coaching measures). Student assistants can also be financed. The costs for student assistants and material costs are generally eligible up to a total of € 250,000. The funding period is generally up to 18 months.
In the second funding phase, the focus is on further development work, measures to start business activities and the creation of the conditions for external corporate financing.

Bavarian business plan competitions

The Bavarian business plan competitions are aimed at founders and entrepreneurs with innovative, growth-oriented business ideas, with a focus on technology. As a rule, there is still a need for financing to concretise and implement the business idea.

At least one team member lives or studies in Bavaria or the company headquarters is in Bavaria. Each team of participants must designate a main contact as the official representative of the team. If a team is awarded a prize, it may only participate in higher levels of the competition in the following years.
