International Working Groups

Prof. Axel Schulte and the staff of the Institute regularly participate in international working groups. We gain exciting insights into the relevant work of partner nations and organizations, sharpen our lines of argumentation and network far beyond the boundaries of the Institute.

NATO Working Groups

NATO's Science & Technology Organization promotes technical-scientific exchange between representatives of universities, research institutions, armed forces and industrial companies of the alliance partners.  The Human Factors and Medicine Panel (HFM) and the System Concepts and Integration Panel (SCI) are of particular interest for the professorship of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance. Prof. Schulte was a representative of the German Academia on the SCI Panel for 10 years. Prof. Schulte and his team actively participated in the following "Task Groups (TG)":

  • NATO  STO TG HFM-247
"Human-Autonomy Teaming: Supporting Dynamically Adjustable Collaboration"
    2014 - 2017
  • NATO  STO TG SCI-206
"System Design Considerations and Technologies for Safe High Tempo Operations in Degraded Environments"
    2009 - 2012
  • NATO STO TG HFM-170
"Supervisory Control of Multiple Uninhabited Systems – Methodologies and Enabling Human-Robot Interface Technologies"
    2008 - 2011
  • NATO  STO TG HFM-078
"Unmanned Military Vehicles (UMVs): Human Factors in Augmenting the Force"
    2004 - 2007
  • NATO  STO TG SCI-118
"Automation Technologies and Application Considerations for Highly Integrated Mission Systems"
    2003 - 2007

GARTEUR Working Groups

GARTEUR (Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe) is an organisation to promote the cooperation of European nations in the field of security and defence oriented aeronautical research. Prof. Schulte and his team participated in the following "Action Groups (AG)" in the field of "Flight Mechanics, Systems and Integration (FM)":

  • GARTEUR AG FM-18
"Machine Based Reasoning for Multiple UAVs"
    2008 - 2013
  • GARTEUR AG FM-14
    "Autonomy in UAVs"
    2004 - 2007

Fraunhofer Institute

Prof. Schulte has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) in Wachtberg-Werthhoven near Bonn since 2010. From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the predecessor organization, the "Forschungsgesellschaft für angewandte Naturwissenschaften (FGAN)", also the FKIE Institute. The roots of the Institute go back to the Research Institute for "Anthropotechnik (FAT)", i.e., Human Factors Engineering, which was founded in 1969. In Germany, the Institute began systematically investigating man-machine systems in the context of military applications, a field to which the professorship for Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance at the Bundeswehr University Munich has been active in since 1984 (with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Reiner Onken) and still feels committed today.

Foreign Partner Universities

The professorship for Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance continuously maintains technically motivated partnerships with foreign university institutes. This not only benefits research, but also our students, who are regularly given the opportunity to complete their master's theses there. These include:

  • ISAE Supaero
    Toulouse, France
  • Memorial University Newfoundland
    St. Johns, Canada
  • Naval Postgraduate School
    Monterey, CA, USA
  • Universidad Complutense
    Madrid, Spain
  • University of Central Florida
    Orlando, FL, USA
