23 June 2022 "Morgen" (tomorrow) was the title of the German Air Force Forum at the ILA (Berlin Air Show). Under the direction of Lieutenant General Dr. Ansgar Rieks (Deputy Air Chief, GAF) and hosted by Pelin Afat (IABG), distinguished experts discussed future trends from different perspectives.

6 Juni 2022. Matthias Frey has won the "Best Student Paper" award at the 12th IEEE Conference on Cognitive and Computational Aspects of Situation Management (CogSIMA) in Salerno, Italy.

21 July 2020. or the second time since 2018, a researcher of the professorship of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance wins the "Best Paper Award" of the International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics (EPCE) on the occasion of this year's Human Computer Interaction International (HCII), which had to be held online this year due to a pandemic. The prize winner is M.Sc. Simon Schwerd.

19 May 2020. Yannick Brand, MSc, is a doctor of engineering. As if one does not have enough challenges to master during a doctorate, he is also faced with the doctoral examination under corona conditions. But he wouldn't be Yannick Brand, aerospace engineer of our own university department and research associate of the professorship from 2013 to 2018, if he didn't also manage this on the side.

20 March 2020. Since this week, the staff of the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance is in home office due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Well, digitalization is of course more than a daily matter for our institute. The processes and tasks in research and teaching are quickly adapted to the new conditions ...

27 February 2020. Today Prof. Axel Schulte, Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance, hosted a delegation of about twenty members of the Clausewitz-Society (Regional District Bavaria) headed by Brigadier General (ret.) Gerhard Schulz. About 40 officer cadets from the Air Force Officers' School in Fürstenfeldbruck were also part of the delegation. This brought together very young and not so young anymore, but very experienced personalities interested in military aviation ...

24 February 2020. Under the chairmanship of Brigadier General Christian Leitges (Head of Department I, Further Development and Planning), the final presentation of our OpFoKus project took place today at the Luftwaffe Command in Berlin-Gatow. OpFoKus stands for "Operational requirements for the conception of a manned / unmanned flying weapon system". Since the end of 2016, the scientists of the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance have been investigating future military air operations, scenarios and operational solutions under the assumption of technologies for Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T).

12 February 2020. Dr Diana Donath and Prof Axel Schulte join a new working group of the NATO Science and Technology Organization. As in previous activities of this kind, the focus is again on the interaction of intelligently automated unmanned systems with the human user. The newly founded Task Group of the Human Factors and Medicine Panel (HFM-330) will specifically address the topic "Human Systems Integration for Meaningful Human Control over AI-based Systems".

12 December 2019. Jane Jean Kiam, MSc, is a doctor of engineering. And with what a brilliant colloquium: clear case, summa cum laude! The trained electrical engineer (Brest and Munich) has been working for a good four years on artificial intelligence (AI) for planning so-called HAPS missions. HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo Satellite) are ultra-light, unmanned high-altitude aircraft which are used, for example, to obtain geoinformation and for communication.

28 November 2019. For about four years now, we have been developing concepts and prototypes for Manned-unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) combat aircraft missions in the SAMU project. The approaches of scalable UAV autonomy and adaptive pilot assistance are in the focus of this project. In the OpFoKus project, mission scenarios and operational requirements for manned-unmanned air operations are systematically developed. Since the beginning of this month, the time had finally come: Testing our functionalities integrated in the simulator with fighter pilots of the German Air Force!

26 September 2019. For the first time this year, the "National FCAS Summit" will take place in Berlin. Prof. Axel Schulte from the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UBM) is one of the headliners in the program. Prof. Schulte presents our consolidated concept and the implemented solution approach for intelligent cockpit and UAV automation in Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) missions.

24 September 2019. For the first time, the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance hosts the German-American research group on "Advanced Helicopter Technologies". The cooperation is an initiative of the Departments of Defense of both nations and aims to promote the exchange of users, technology managers and scientists on both sides of the Atlantic.

5 June 2019. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is inviting representatives from research, industry and politics to Berlin for an exclusive symposium on the subject of "Artificial Intelligence - Made in Germany". Prof. Axel Schulte (right in the picture) and Yannick Brand (HAT.tec, left in the picture) introduce themselves with a tandem talk in the thematic block AI in Aeronautics. This format offers the opportunity to show not only our research but also the transfer of the results into the economy.

21 May 2019. Since 2018 it has been officially running, our international cooperation under the title "US-German Research Project Agreement (RPA) on Advanced Helicopter Technologies". For the purpose of intensive technical and scientific exchange, German scientists and officials (BAAINBw, DLR, UBM) and their US counterparts (US Army, AMRDEC) meet twice a year. This time it was again the turn of the branch office on the NASA Ames site in Moffett Field, CA.

14 May 2019. Ruben Strenzke is a doctor of engineering. From 2008 to 2011, the graduated computer scientist was a research assistant at the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance. During this time he played a major role in a first laboratory prototype for Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) in transport helicopter missions. He was responsible for mission planning and replanning during flight of the helicopter and the UAVs involved.

10 May 2019. For many years, the International Symposium on Aviation Psychology (ISAP) has been held every two years at Wright State University, Dayton, OH, a university which maintains a wide range of professional contacts with the US Air Force due to its proximity to the traditional Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This is not the only reason why our contributions from the field of military aviation research (MARC, we reported) are always highly welcome here ...

9 April 2019. The German Navy is also interested in unmanned flying and Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) missions. On the occasion of the UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) Workshop of the Naval Command in Nordholz, Prof. Axel Schulte presents the institute's research results on mission control and user-centered automation approaches in MUM-T missions to 40 naval staff officers.

20 March 2019. Together with professors from five university departments Professor Axel Schulte (Dept. Aerospace Science) is responsible for the foundation of the Military Aviation Research Center (MARC) at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. MARC's goal is to connect and integrate the disciplines relevant to research in military aviation.

9 February 2019. The International Conference on Intelligent Human Systems Integration (IHSI) is taking place for the second time (after Dubai 2018), this time in San Diego, CA. The topic is a direct hit for the research of the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance. With the scientific direction of the conference track "Human Autonomy Teaming" Professor Axel Schulte is actively involved in the design of the conference program. The staff of the professorship contributes to the sessions with six articles and lectures ...

16. Dezember 2018. Bionik ist die Umsetzung von Lösungen aus der Biologie in der Technik. Gerade die Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik hat den Oberstufenschülern des Gymnasiums Oberhaching hier eine Menge zu bieten. Das Bionik-Seminar war der Anlass für eine Exkursion an die UniBwM. Dekan Axel Schulte führt die interessierte Gruppe durch die Labore der Aerodynamik (Vogelflug im Windkanal), des Leichtbaus (Wabenstrukturen im Flügel), der Luftfahrttechnik (Gestenkommunikation mit Drohnen) und der Flugführung (unbemanntes Fliegen mit KI).

22 November 2018. This is quite impressive when the highest officer of the German Air Force, Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz (Chief of Staff GAF), visits our laboratory on the doorstep of decisive decisions for the planned new European combat aircraft FCAS (Future Combat Air System). FCAS is to be developed as the successor to the Eurofighter as part of a Franco-German cooperation and the activities of the professorship for Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance for Manned-unmanned Teaming and Cockpit Design will hit the nail on the head.

24 October 2018. "There is no requirement for bad places ..." could have been the motto for the first summer school of the Chair of Aircraft Dynamics and Flight Guidance in Limone sul Garda. In fact, the 16 doctoral students had to fight their way through an almost two-day lecture program on Human-Automation Integration and Manned-unmanned Teaming. At first, Prof. Schulte lectured with the support of Dr. Donath.

23 October 2018. Research in the engineering sciences must lead to innovative industrial products! This is the firm belief of the institute's employees Yannick Brand and Fabian Schmitt. Together with Prof. Axel Schulte, they founded HAT.tec. The HAT.tec GmbH is a spin-off of the Institute of Flight Systems and will deal with the industrialization of the research results into "Human Autonomy Teaming".

16 October 2018. Fabian Schmitt was awarded for the "Best Paper" at the NATO Symposium on "Human Autonomy Teaming" in Portsmouth, UK. His presentation and the paper "Experimental Evaluation of a Cooperative Automation Approach for Manned-Unmanned Teaming in Future Military Helicopter Missions" were very well received in the Technical Evaluation Report, which is written by an international team led by Dr. Robert M. Taylor (dstl).

25 September 2018. Although it is already the third time that scientists of the professorship participate in the EAAP conference, the Institute of Flight Systems presents itself for the first time in its own session. The session focuses on the results of the experimental campaign in the helicopter simulator (we reported). EAAP stands for "European Association for Aviation Psychology". The EAAP conference takes place every two years, this time in historic Dubrovnik.

12 September 2018. Dr. Tom Prévôt, Director of Engineering, Airspace Systems at Uber, inspires the Institute of Flight Systems with the Californian company's visions of future individual transport with air taxis. He demonstrates how the Silicon Valley gurus approach things – "think big" is the motto here. In 2023, Uber plans to launch flying taxis in Los Angeles and other major cities.

18 July 2018. Under the title "Humans and Autonomy Working in Teams" seven scientists from three nations (Germany, Netherlands and USA) present their work. The event, organized by Prof. Axel Schulte as an "Invited Session", is part of the 15. Internationalen Konferenz zu "Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics (EPCE)" under the umbrella of the mega-event "Human Computer Interaction (HCI) International 2018" in Las Vegas, in which the Institute has been actively involved for many years.

17 July 2018. Institute employee M.Sc. Yannick Brand wins the "Best Paper Award" of the International Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics (EPCE) at this year's Human Computer Interaction International (HCII) in Las Vegas. The title of the article is "Design and Evaluation of a Workload-adaptive Associate System for Cockpit Crews". He deals with the presentation of the concepts and experimental results of testing his prototype of an assistance system adapted to the mental state of pilots for Mannd-unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) missions.
